In time for Christmas 2003, Clive's fourth volume of poetry explores the waterway
that has had a significant affect on his life.

TO MY DAUGHTER
ON HER 18th BIRTHDAY

Happy Birthday
smilling one
Happy Rebellion
may you smoke dangerously,
drink in moderation,
and cause yourself
the necessary pain
to pass through
the wall of childhood
into my land.
This place,
where people
live like startled deer;
beautiful and gracious,
but always flexed
against the dangers
which inevitably come;
where the world is both grander
and meaner;
where smiles and tears
are never quite so simple;
where trust and truth
are hard fought things;
where fathers are a little smaller
and daughters a little taller.
