Volume 7 - August 23, 2006 - Tax Facts

Did You Know that Ontario is the only province in Canada where your city property taxes subsidize programmes such as, welfare, employment services, social housing, child care and health and ambulance services?

Did You Know that one third of your city’s property tax subsidize provincial programs that you should already have paid for through your income taxes?

Did You Know that Ottawa spends more per household on roads than most other cities in Ontario? Ottawa $275, Toronto $160.

Did You Know that development charges only cover some of capital costs of new roads and that the rest of capital costs and all the operating costs (repairs, plowing etc.) for roads come out of the property tax?

Did You Know that by 2021, South Nepean will have a population of 105,000 - 51,000 more people than today?

Did You Know that Riverside South will have a population of 51,000 – 44,000 more people than today?

Did You Know that three additional lanes per direction on major N-S roads would need to be built if the North-South LRT isn’t?

Did You Know that major reconfiguration of downtown streets would be required to increase their capacity and that congestion would be significantly worse?

Did You Know that the LRT is the only project in Canada with a Federal and Provincial contribution of $400 million?

Did You Know that Ottawa was able to secure $400 million for the North-South route from the federal and provincial governments on condition that a successful environmental assessment was completed?

Did You Know that it took the city eight years of study, a pilot project, financial and contract negotiations to prepare for the North-South LRT construction?

Did You Know that the East-West LRT Environmental Assessments are underway right now?

Did You Know that deferring the North-South line will not bring on the East-West line faster? It would just kill a green, cost effective transit service to the south of the city and through the core?

Did You Know that if you include moderate as well as severe air quality advisory days, Ottawa has as many health compromising days as clear during the summer?

Did You Know that the number one reason why children are admitted to the hospital today is asthma and lung dysfunction?

Did You Know that the principle contributor to poor air quality in Ottawa comes from the tail pipes of cars, trucks and buses?

Did You Know having the North-South LRT run on electricity will reduce these air toxins because more people will be taking the clean air LRT?

Did you know - that more than 50 million kilograms of pesticides are still used in Canada.

Did you know - that 76% of Ottawans support a pesticide phase-out on private property.

Did you know - that 82% of Ottawans support a phase-out in public parks.

Did you know - that 77% of Ottawans said they believe lawn pesticides “pose a threat to the environment.”

Did you know - that 74% believe these chemicals “pose a health threat to children.”

Did you know - that council voted against restricting the cosmetic use of pesticides.

Volume 1 - April 26, 2006

Did you know - City Council saved $700,000 by purchasing diesel powered buses instead of hybrid-electric buses.
Did you know - It will cost $15 million more to operate the diesel buses than the hybrid electric and they will be more polluting.

Did you know - that there were 197 new models of cars available to suburban residents?
Did you know - there were 0 convenient alternatives.

Did you know - that Ottawa’s public transit system has had decades in which there was no new investment and no new capacity added?
Did you know - Ottawa adds a 100 kilometres every year to its road system and spends $115 more per household on roadways than Toronto and is $67 higher than the 9 city Ontario average?

Did you know - "Crime trends have been going steadily down for 15 years," said University of Ottawa, Professor Irving Waller.
Did you know - that crime decreased in Ottawa by 7% from 2003 to 2004.
Did you know - the Police Services Board requested an additional $6.3 million, and in the 2005-06 fiscal year there was an additional request of $14.9 million above their requested funding for the previous year.
