The provincial Ministry of Transport has submitted their final report recommending amongst other things widening sections of the Queensway.  In order to challenge this recommendation, a "bump-up" request has been sent in to the Minister of the Environment.  This bump-up request is the best way to ask for more sustainable alternatives to be evaluated.  The bump-up request was prepared for the City Centre Coalition.

You can help stop the widening of the Queensway by writing to the Minister of the Environment in support of this bump-up request.

For more information on the Queensway widening, on the bump-up request, and to access a link to the Minister of the Environment's e-mail address to easily add your voice of support, please go the website. See left for URL.

February 2007
Threat of Queensway expansion is back

The Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO) released their recommendations on January 29th for the Queensway. http://www.417ea-tesr.com/downloads/q_way_TESR_final_jan_2007.pdf

Their recommendations include widening the Queensway by one lane on each side and making many modifications to on and off ramps throughout the city. Their are direct concerns for Old Ottawa East and the Glebe.

The deadline to challenge these proposals is March 2. (email addresses below)

Old Ottawa East
1) Widening will increase traffic, vibration, noise and pollution as well as put the roadway that much closer to homes and playgrounds in
the neighbourhood.
2) Moving the Lees Avenue off ramp to line up with Chestnut, will facilitate more cut-through traffic on residential streets in the vicinity of Lady Evelyn School.
3) The province will spend hundreds of millions of dollars more on roads rather than on rapid transit, which would move more people with
fewer negative impacts.

Glebe
The recommendations are to get rid of the old Board of Education building on Bronson and straighten Chamberlain to the Bronson off-ramp. Not news, but...
1) Left turns from southbound Bronson will not be allowed at the new Chamberlain intersection. All such traffic will continue to turn left onto Imperial and merge back to Chamberlain.
2) Imperial Avenue will not be closed.
3) Chamberlain becomes the effective collector to Queensway traffic, with higher volume and speed as well as not closing off Imperial to local traffic. It's the worst of both worlds.

The deadline to challenge these proposals is March 2nd. The MTO encourages people to contact them with questions and concerns. The
MTO contact is:

For concerns that remain unresolved people must contact the Minister of the Environment and request a "bump-up" of this study to get a
more thorough individual environmental assessment. The bump-up requests must be received by the Minister whose contact information is below with a copy sent to the MTO contact above by March 2nd.

July 2005
Imperial Ave. link to Chamberlain to remain
open

Concern is raised at the latest interation of the MTO plans for the Queensway Bronson interchange. Original plans had the Imperial Avenue link to Chamberlain closed when Chamberlain is extended east through the Board of Education site from Bronson. This would have returned a little bit of quiet to the surrounding residential neighbourhood. Now the MTO wishes to keep the Imperial street link open and retain the left turn to the east lane.

Recent (EARLY JUNE O5) changes have been made to the Queensway plans at Bronson. The road linking Imperial and Chamberlain, originally to be taken out, is back. It would appear that Bronson southbound left-turns will only be permitted onto Imperial. Together with Bronson northbound right-turns this will retain Imperial as a high speed traffic feeder lane into the "new and improved" Chamberlain arterial. (see map 370k pdf)

This change also raises the problem of left turning traffic on southbound Bronson backing up into the proposed new off-ramp to Chamberlain intersection. If you missed the public meetings, you may comment about this traffic- generating, future gridlocking change, in writing, to Mr Brian Ruck ( bruck@tsh.ca) or Mr. David Lindensmith (Dave.Lindensmith@mto.gov.on.ca).
